2016-2017 Rule of Life

This is an example of what a Rule of Life may look like for our interns. This is the current class of interns’ Rule of Life that they wrote together at the beginning of the year. After the Christmas holiday, they will sit down to discuss whether it is still working or not, and make changes if necessary. It is a living document for the community.

Rule of Life: TAP 6.0

We will do our utmost to consider how we may best love each and every person in such a way as to proclaim the love of God in every interaction – to attempt to perceive how to make one’s day easier, brighter, and lighter. We seek to create God’s kingdom on Earth, through constant consideration and genuine love. We will build each other up when we inevitably fail, as we are all fallen, and we will work together to grow closer to Christ.

We will listen to each other and be fully present and consciously engaged every day sharing in both the highs and the lows of the next ten months. We will support each other in tough moments; we will be direct in necessary moments; and we will love in every moment.

We agree to trust each other with the truth, if we have a problem or a concern. We will not create triangles, but come to one another. When we come to one another, we will listen and respond with an open mind and heart, not defensiveness and hostility. To guide us in this practice, we will refer to Jesus’ words in Matthew 18: 15-16, “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that  ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’”

We will practice hospitality within the community of St. Tim’s. To do this, we will host Small Group once a month. We will also be hospitable to each other, promoting community, communication and trust in our household by cooking and eating at least one meal a week together. These meals may or may not take place with JTV. #teamjane

On the practical side of living life in community we will each commit to being responsible for ourselves and respectful of each other and our home. We will each contribute $40/month to our community grocery fund. If this seems to be too little or too much we will adjust the amount. We will keep a public grocery list and review it before we go shopping as necessary. We will practice healthy and less stressful living by planning our meals for the week (or more) ahead helping us to budget money and time. We will each tidy as we go and pick up after ourselves. For the larger chores, we will divide and conquer. We will do them as the come up without formal assignment. If this causes problems, we will reassess and assign duties as necessary.

Most of all, we will make the most out of the next ten months by learning, growing and doing life together. We will learn about ourselves, about each other and about the community of St. Tim’s as we #trusttheprocess of our TAP year. Yay!
